A striking contrast between Bronze Age and Iron Age religion is the status of the goddesses. Bronze Age goddesses were not submissive to the male gods; they did not take orders from their husbands and fathers. In fact, they held great power over them.
Iron Age religions reordered their pantheons to make the goddesses submissive and, in the case of Judaism, eliminated the goddesses altogether. Some Bronze Age goddess traditions lived on, particularly the Eleusinian Mysteries of Greece, which we will explore below, and the Isis traditions of the Roman era, which we will get to in later episodes.
